AUTHOR'S BIO
For over 55 years Vera J. Katz, Professor Emerita from Howard University has been a prominent voice in the realm of theatre and the arts. As a legendary acting and directing professor, her teaching technique has worked to shape the careers of many of today’s brightest stars from Broadway to Hollywood. Notwithstanding her many notable academic achievements, her greatest accomplishments are the lives she’s impacted by insisting Black Americans (specifically) both understand the value of their story and the absolute need to have those storylines owned and created by Black Americans.
In 1969 Howard University became the conduit where provisional teacher and student would become a perpetual family through the common bonds of Condition, Culture and The Arts.
QUOTES
I am one of the many students who have benefited from Vera’s methods of instruction and the personal care that she has extended to students beyond the class, rehearsal space, and the stage.
PHYLICIA RASHAD
The scene study that Katz impresses upon her students is one of the most effective means by which an actor can liberate one’s choice, advocate for his character and protect his/her performance from one-dimensional portrayals.
CHADWICK BOSEMAN
Once I left Howard University and started using the skills she taught me I realized how instrumental Professor Katz was shaping me into the actor that I am.
