The Friends of Vera J. Katz Fund
In 1969 Howard University, one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), became the conduit where a provisional teacher and student would become a perpetual family through the common bonds of Condition, Culture, and the Arts.
For over 55 years, Vera J. Katz Professor Emerita from Howard University has been a prominent voice in theatre and the Arts. As a legendary acting and directing professor, her teaching techniques have shaped the careers of many of today’s brightest stars from Broadway to Hollywood, including Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Chadwick Boseman, Taraji P. Henson, and Anthony Anderson, to name a few. Notwithstanding her many notable academic achievements, her most significant accomplishments are the lives she’s impacted by insisting Black Americans (specifically) both understand the value of their story and own those storylines created by them.
The Friends of Vera J. Katz Fund was created as a gift of posterity to honor the artistic legacy and contributions to the Performing Arts of Professor Katz. The Fund will continue to ensure the longevity of her teaching methods and techniques while establishing new standards in artistic achievement in the Performing Arts. Through the collaborative efforts of some of her celebrated student alum, friends, and colleagues, the beneficiaries of The Fund will have access to the following:
-
The Vera J. Katz HBCU Directing and Arts Scholarships
-
Sponsored Master Classes and Workshops facilitated by Professor Katz with celebrated Alum
-
The VERAfied Project - Talent Development
-
Documentary: The Life, Lessons, and Legacy of Vera J. Katz
We are calling upon all who have been Inspired, Influenced, and Impacted by Professor Katz, to become a friend of the fund, #VERAfied. Your tax-deductible monthly, semi-annual, or annual contributions will do well in assisting us to reach our minimum goal of $35,000 annually. We value your commitment as a friend of The Fund and appreciate your support. All donors will receive recognition during our Annual Honors Publication and Awards Ceremony at the end of each fiscal year.
